Biography

Hi. My name is Todd David Olsen, "The Night Owl", "Grasshopper", K1TDO.

I passed my Amateur Extra Class license exam on March 20th, 2016. I am now an Amateur Extra Class licensed operator.

I became a member of:

The Meriden Amateur Radio Club

Ten-Ten Net International

The American Radio Relay League and

CT ARES Region 2

while living at my parents house in Cheshire, CT/USA. I passed FEMA's IS 100, 200, 700 and 800 courses becoming core 4 cerified. My Ten-Ten # is 72725. I am a Primary Net Control Station for the Meriden Amateur Radio Club on the 147.360 MHZ repeater +600 KHZ on Tuesday evenings at 19:30 local time. I was awarded Ham of the Year by the Meriden Amateur Radio Club in 2012. Then I moved to Pulaski Terrace in Plantsville, CT/USA and sold all of my equipment except for my Bencher CW paddle and an MFJ 259B HF/VHF antenna analyzer.

I became a member of the Southington Amateur Radio Association shortly after moving to Plantsville. I also became a member of CT-ARES Region 3.

I sold my Kenwood TS-940S and on February 8, 2017 I purchased myself a Yaesu FT-450D from Gigaparts dot com. I also own and operate a Yaesu FT-7900R and an Icom IC-2300H and a BTECH UV-5X3 tri-bander HT. I like to go on 80 Meters at night and listen to the rag chewers. I also like to listen to the SkyWarn Nets during snow storms in the Winter.

I am now back on packet radio with a Kantronics KAM Plus TNC for HF and VHF packet radio and a Yaesu FT-7900R dual band transceiver (2M / 70CM). My Home BBS is W1EDH. My mailbox/PBBS is K1TDO-1 on 145.09 MHZ with 10 Watts. My terminal is a WYSE WY-60 dumb terminal and a Dell OptiPlex-780 PC with Linux Ubuntu and running an App called Putty terminal software to make my serial port connection. This is the reason I got into this hobby to begin with.

My antenna is now a 53 foot end fed with a 9:1 unun grounded with a 53 foot verticle wire and 160 feet of RG8-U coaxial cable for 6M / HF. I also use a Comet GP-1 dual band verticle antenna on the roof of my apartment for 2M / 70CM.

I'd like to thank:

W1KKF for the arrows.

N1GNV, KA1VT, and AA1CT for helping me pass the Amateur Extra Class license exam.

KC1SA for the FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 and 800 study guide.

WA1JKR for making me feel "at home" in Southington and for fixing things that I blow.

KB1FYL for being Bobcat, for the Kenwood TS-940S, the batteries and power poles.

KB1WOH for help with Putty on Linux Ubuntu and packet radio.

WA1TRY for fixing my PC's and for connecting my radio to my computer with Ham Radio Deluxe.

N1ZN for always having a Jeopardy question on my Meriden ARC 2M FM Net.

And The Southington Housing Authority for giving me permission to have antennas here at Pulaski Terrace.
