Biography

First licensed as WN1BPW (Novice Class) in June 1954 at the age of 13. Changed to W1BPW (General Class)in 1955. Extra Class in 1964. Changed to W1UU in 1975. Primarily a CW operator and got interested in DXing during the sunspot peak in the 1950s. Heavily involved in contest operation for many years. In the mid 1980s became interested in digital technologies including packet radio and connecting to the Internet.

Present interests are QRP CW contesting and the use of JT65/JT9/FT8 technologies. Concentrated on JT-65 WAS on 160-10 meters and achieved the first documented 10-band WAS, including the experimental 60-meter band, in August 2017. FT8 has basically taken over from JT65/JT9.

The present radio technology is SDR allowing a much wider range of operating options using computer skills. It is good to know that amateur radio holds a special place in the development of newer, and exciting, possibilities. It makes the simple antennas such as dipoles and verticals very competitive!

Equipment

Flex-6500 and 43' Ground Plane with 25 radials 160-6 meters. Experimenting with receiving loops for noise reduction.
